I commute to work on my bicycle every day, so I was intrigued when my fearless leader and boss Scott Paisley found a mountain bike trail from my house on Fifth Street, to my work at Blue Wheel. Scott informed me that I could mountain bike to work. This sounded like a great idea……. on paper, but like most of Scott’s plans, when put into practice holes began to form. I love to mountain, bike don’t get me wrong, I just was not too enthusiastic about turning my 20 min bike ride to work, into a 40 min journey through the woods. Call me crazy, but I just didn’t see mountain biking to work as an effective means of transportation. What if I needed to carry something like my lunch or a change of cloths? Mountain bikes don’t really hold panniers very well. But Scott, being the kind of guy that not only see the glass half full but half full of sunshine, rainbows and puppies, found answers to all of my conundrums. “Just wear a messenger bag, you can shower at work, it will give you a boost of energy to start the day, and if you don’t try it you have to fix all the Huffy’s that come in the shop.”
So, the next day, I found myself heading out of my apartment on my mountain bike, in full Lycra and with a packed messenger bag ready to seize the trails. The first part of the ride was nice, not too easy but not too complicated, although the messenger bag which Scott recommended bounced and hit my back, giving the sensation of a vindictive, violent masseuse working my muscles. I’m no doctor, but I don’t think messenger bags were designed for turbulence.
